I don’t know how to start this so I’m just getting straight to the point. I don’t think it needs any kind of introduction because the subject is written in the title. Here are the two most common questions that most people ask when I have a conversation with them:
- I want to do something but for some reason I’m unable to do it. – Meaning unable to start or initiate.
- I’ve started, but am unable to sustain or unable to hold my interest to it. – Meaning unable to continue.
So these are the two basic and important questions that come almost in all of our lives. I’m going to start with an example which is quite suitable to explain these two situations. There are so many people who want to lose weight and they try many things, in fact almost everything, to get rid of the extra weight. So now I’ll talk about the solution here. If we get to the root of the problem, then it becomes easier to solve it. Everybody has desires to fulfill. Here the desire is losing weight. Now the problem with most of the people is that:
First, they start doing something without setting any aim or goal. They just do their work without knowing their goal. Like someone told them to do this or that and they started doing it and eventually they lost interest. In this, the problem is that it gets boring after sometime. As soon as we start doing something without any goal we start to get bored. It’s very obvious to lose interest no matter how interesting the work is. It happens almost with everyone.
Secondly, they set their goals to be too big to achieve, for example, when we think of losing 20-30 kg in one or two weeks. So these are the two major problems, but we have a solution which lies in between these two problems which is very simple and interesting. What we have to do is start off with small and easy goals and as soon as we achieve those goals we have to give ourselves an award, an accolade.
Now I’ll tell you in particular on how to do this.
For losing weight there are some exercises for example push ups. If I tell you to do push ups, if you really want to feel the effect, you can do it right now. But you can’t do it for too long. As soon as you start doing it you’ll start to feel that it doesn’t make any difference and it’s not going to help you lose weight. Now moving on to the second goal. You’re aiming to lose your 20 kg in 10 or 20 days. It sounds good in the beginning, but when you actually start doing it and as soon as you go to a mirror and see yourself, you’ll lose all your hope and think that you’ve just wasted your time. So what you have to do is set a little goal and after achieving it, give yourself an award. It’s as simple as that. First, look for your capability. For example if you can do 5-6 push ups then set your goal to 7-8 push ups and once you reached to 8 give yourself a feedback that you are doing good. Even if you’ve achieved a little, don’t forget to award yourself for reaching this far. If we start doing this bit by bit we are definitely going to achieve big. The best thing about this is that after you’ve achieved it, you seek for more, but you will have to wait, for example, if you want to do exercise for 1 hour, but you did it for 50 minutes, then tomorrow you automatically feel that you should finish that 1 hour.
To sum this all up, you don’t need to look at your work as work, make it a game. Have you ever noticed that we never get bored when we play games? Why we get bored with work is because there is no fun in it and we see it as a thing we must do rather than enjoy doing it. So what we have to do is make our work look like a game. We should live our life with a mentality that we should neither run nor stop because if you run you’ll get tired and finally give up. People who run get tired and give up easily, but you have to be clever by not running. Life is not a race, but it’s a long way which can only be covered by walking. You just have to walk in every situation no matter if you succeed or fail. If you follow this, one day you will realize that you’ve come a long way from before. The aim is not to make a building overnight. Everything takes time.
So my point is that we need to change our habits. A man who can change his habits can have a different tomorrow, but a man who can’t change his habits has the same tomorrow as his present.The answer on how to change one’s habit is by doing things regularly. If you cannot make exercise your habit then you cannot lose your weight in any condition. There is no meaning of 1 hour exercises without turning that into a habit. You can make it a habit by doing the following: If your mind says to do it for 1 hour, you do it for 50 minutes and save the thirst for more for the following day.
